Day 27, TX, Del Rio to Camp Wood

We left the motel just before 8:00, heading through Del Rio in low o'cast mist and 33 degrees. We ate a small breakfast in a coffee shop and left town on hwy 90 east. It was so dark from the heavy cloud cover I bought new batteries for my tail lights and left them on all morning.
We crossed into Kinney county and the shoulder became one big rumble strip it was so rough.
Lunch in Brackettville and then north on hwy 334. It was really rough too but there was almost no traffic on it so was more relaxing for us. It became more treed, greener, and had tons of wildlife to watch. We saw deer, spotted deer, pronghorn antelope, armadillos, hawks, buzzards, and a roadkill Javelina.
I tried 4 or 5 times to capture an Armadillo on camera but they always scurried away before I could get ready.
This was signed as the "North Prong" of the Nueces River. It is designed to flow over the roadway when it flows, making the road impassible at times. In fact many of the dips in the rolling road were signed at the bottom with a flood gauge that often measured over 6 ft above the road surface.
Hwy 334 ended at hwy 55 where we headed north to Montell and Camp Wood. There was a warm showers listed in Montell but they never answered their phone. Montell has nothing but a few houses. We came to the first campground listed on our map and stayed there. It only cost $6 each and is the nicest campground yet, by far.
78 miles today.
