Low 20's this morning. Frost covering the trees and our tents, inside and out. Both of us couldn't stay warm enough in our bags. I donned my down jacket and thermal riding pants but not soon enough to warm my feet before rising. We had hot coffee and tea while packing. The ground fog started to dissipate even before we left.
The Nueces River was steaming from the temperature differential.
We got breakfast at the only restaurant in Camp Wood. We took some clothes off after eating because the sun was warming up fast. Leaving Camp Wood we hit another of the "3 Twisted Sisters", hwy 337. So named because they are famous for being tight, and curvy, (and steep). Perfect for sports cars and motorcycles of which we saw plenty.
This is one of the downhills and you can see the road cut across the hill across the way.
There were more of the flood gauges next to the road one of them was on the crown of a hill. Hard to imagine how it would flood on a hill!
We ate a small lunch at a biker shop and restaurant then got supplies at this store in Leakey.
This is near the top of one climb. I am holding the camera level to give you an idea of the steepness.
We rode 45 miles and had four hard climbs. The last one was so steep going down we reached 45+ mph.
We got a few more supplies at this store near Vanderpool and rode the last four miles to the Lost Maples State Natural Area.
The park police stopped to talk and said we should've been charged the primitive camp price ($10 less) and allowed to camp nearby but it was too late.
